Chromium and molybdenum are important elements of P11. Chromium, or chrome, improves high-temperature strength, increases oxidation resistance and raises the tensile, yield and hardness at room temperatures. Molybdenum increases the strength, elastic limit, resistance to wear, impact qualities and hardenability. It increases the resistance to softening, restrains grain growth and makes chromium steel less susceptible to embrittlement. Moly is also the most effective additive for increasing high temperature creep strength, or creep resistance. It also enhances the corrosion resistance of steel and inhibits pitting. Due to the ferromagnetic characteristics of iron, a few steel alloys in A335 P11 pipes can be used in applications where their reactions to magnetism are important. This includes transformers and electric motors. P11 is also a popular grade for many different applications such as Spacecraft, Turbine blades of jet engines and Nuclear reactors. ASTM A335 specification covers nominal wall and minimum wall thickness pipe that with alloy material and manufactured in seamless type. The pipe under this specification shall be suitable for bending, flanging, and all the other similar processing and formations. Although it shall be good for fusion welding.


The pipe is a chromium molybdenum alloy. The presence of these two elements in SA335 p11 pipe increases its mechanical properties. In addition to these two elements, ASME SA335 grade p11 pipe contains trace amounts of carbon, sulphur, phosphorus, silicon, and manganese. For example, the addition of Chromium is known to increase the alloys tensile strength, yield strength, fatigue resistance, wear resistance, and hardness property. The increase in these properties is ideal for preventing oxidation at high temperature applications.


While Molybdenum increases the overall strength, resistance, elasticity, hardenability and overall quality, moly ensures that the material is more resistant to softening, restrains the growth of grains and lessens the chances of embrittlement. It is the single additive that is responsible for the increase in high temperature resistance and it also improves the corrosion resistance to steel.
